DETROIT, MI – Eminem says in the song “Berzerk” that it’s time to “take it back to straight hip hop and start it from scratch.”
Two Detroit natives who opened the urban clothing store where Eminem earned street cred in the mid-90s plan on doing just that – with an even hipper approach.
Jerome Mongo and Maurice Malone, now a New York fashion designer, have plans to re-open the Hip Hop Shop in Detroit, possibly in a matter of months.
“I don’t like to just wait around; that’s what people do here (in Detroit),” Mongo said. “I like to make it happen, so let’s make it happen.”
The original Hip Hop Shop opened at 15736 W. 7 Mile in on Dec. 3,1993 on the city’s west side and was a hub for the hip hop and rap music scene until it closed in 1998.
Eminem (Marshall Mathers III), members of the group D12 like the late Proof (DeShaun Holton), and plenty of others often honed their skills at the Hip Hop Shop during its Saturday open mic sessions…….
It is almost like we stepped out of a time machine and it was 1997 all over again. If this is just a taste of what to expect from the new MMLP2, look out Hip Hop world! It’s a wrap!
